sympathetic portrait of a foe
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
A short account of the life and thought of a man with whom Morley (a liberal) could not agree. My impression is that Morley would never have been so fair in his account if he had perceived any "danger to the cause" in this sad reactionary. As it is, I thought he did a good job summarizing De Maistre's ideas.
"He looked upon the history of the West in its integrity, and was entirely free from anything like that disastrous kind of misconception which makes the English Protestant treat the long period between St. Paul and Martin Luther as a howling waste, or which makes some Americans omit from all account the still longer period of human effort from the crucifixion of Christ to the Declaration of Independence."
"The Crusades, vulgarly treated as the wars of a blind and superstitious piety, were in truth wars of high policy. From the Council of Clermont down to the famous day of Lepanto, the hand and spirit of the Pontiff were to be traced in every part of that tremendous struggle which prevented Europe from being handed over to the tyranny, ignorance, and barbarism that have always been the inevitable fruits of Mahometan conquest, and had already stamped out civilisation in Asia Minor and Palestine and Greece, once the very garden of the universe."
"The barbarians of industrialism, grasping chiefs and mutinous men, give no ear to priest or pontiff, who speak only dead words, who confront modern issues with blind eyes, and who stretch out a palsied hand to help. Christianity, according to a well-known saying, has been tried and failed; the religion of Christ remains to be tried. One would prefer to qualify the first clause, by admitting how much Christianity has done for Europe even with its old organisation, and to restrict the charge of failure within the limits of the modern time. To-day its failure is too patent....`They talk about the first centuries of Christianity,' said De Maistre, `I would not be sure that they are over yet.' Perhaps not; only if the first centuries are not yet over, it is certain that the Christianity of the future will have to be so different from the Christianity of the past, as to demand or deserve another name."

A Quiet Return to Monarchy
By April Sage
An interesting, if sometimes stark look back at a perplexing time. The French Revolution had done its worst damage, and France had been reeling over the chaos left in its wake. The republic government was a crippled and inadequate to the people's needs. Most desired a return to monarchial government, but feared the Counter-Revolution that republican adherents were claiming would be necessary to achieve that end. Maistre's reasoned arguments and predictions showed them the way would be far easier than the nay-sayers were predicting. His predictions proved to be prescient. The monarchy returned without loss of life.

His reasoning about the causes of the French Revolution not quite as congenial to my taste. His experiences, being on the wrong side during the revolution, had jaded him. He was harsh in his derision of the entire proceeding, characterizing the blood-bath as the righteous wrath of God raining down upon the corrupted French people. He seems to have little sympathy for anyone killed during those dark years except the poor martyred King Louis IVI.

Some of Maistre's writing is brilliantly insightful. It is certainly worthwhile as an alternative perspective from the near constant eulogizing of even the harshest excesses of the French Revolution. In spite of his jaded perspective, this book is an interesting and worthwhile read. However, if you want the best take on the anti-revolutionary point of view, there is nothing to compare with Edmund Burke's brilliant Reflections on the Revolution in France. But then Burke's writing is without peer.
